[7.27.2004] Review
by: soihadtoshoothim @ 11:19 am

Hell yes. I’ve been patiently waiting for this new CD from Jersey’s sex metal pop-grinders to finally come out, and it’s been well worth the wait. Some of you may remember SOIHADTOSHOOTHIM from a handful of split 7″s and compilation appearances in the mid-90’s, where they laid down some pulverizing, yet off-kilter, powerviolence/grindcore. The band seemed to disappear for a couple years, but reemerged recently with a completely re-tooled sound and style. The band’s vicious blasts and face-peeling distortion are perfectly intact, but this new 5 song CD showcases a uniquely BENT pop element that has totally catapulted this release into my top 10 for 2004. A seamless mashup of warped grindcore / speedcore acrobatics, ferocious double-bass drumming, and sugary, fractured pop hooks that are perfected by Contessa Von Bismarck’s sweetly/strongly delivered vocals, and who frankly reminds me alot of the singer from Velocity Girl (which is a good thing…a GREAT thing). Yeah, there are male lead vocals on this too, cleanly yelped and somnambulant…which, combined with the skronky no-wav-y (sort of, but not really…) breakdowns that pop up throughout this brilliant disc, also remind me of SEBADOH, in a weird way. So yeah, this is like Sebadoh, Infest, Napalm Death, Floor, Daughters, and girlie-indie-pop a la Velocity Girl and Rainer Maria all thrown into one fucked up blender-shake of coked out blastpop. Sweet packaging too…minimal info and no lyrics, but with a photo spread of wonderfully demented shots of the band members in all sorts of illicit behavior. Highly recommended!

So this past Friday we recorded a song for an upcoming E-Music venture called Crisp. We recorded at Atomic in Brooklyn with Dean Baltulonis. Dean rocks, as does Leroy. The song is called Coroners Aria, and actually deals with some personal stuff related to the band. The song will be available on the E-Music site in the nearer than further future (yeah we don’t really know yet).
